Oratorio : Joseph as Revelation is Hong Kong Church Music Association’s first commissioned work specifically for singing in the Cantonese dialect. The composer is Mr. Huang An-Lun, a Canadian Chinese renowned for his sacred choral works, cantata, symphonic compositions etc. Joseph as Revelation was written for mixed voices, a bass soloist, a tenor soloist, and a mezzo soprano soloist, accompanied by organ, brass ensemble, percussion and timpani.
This work features the character Joseph from the Old Testament Bible, how his life is seen as foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. Both Joseph and Jesus experienced suffering, betrayal, overcoming temptations and ultimately exaltation, their stories share significant parallels that highlight God’s plan of salvation.
This work has ten movements depicting Joseph as Jacob’s beloved son, Joseph’s betrayal by his brothers, Joseph fleeing temptation, Joseph’s afflictions and eventual exaltation, lesson of forgiveness and reconciliation and blessings of the hungry ones in times of famine. Joseph experienced God’s hand behind all those circumstances. Joseph’s story reveals the divine mystery of Christ embedded in the Old Testament, inspiring awe in us of a faithful God who keeps His covenants and steadfast love with those who love Him and obey His commands, He is worthy of all our worship and praises.
This concert will be performed by choirs of Hong Kong Church Music Association, in conjunction with choristers from Hong Kong churches totaling over 340 in number, conducted by Dr Angela Tam Ching Chi, the first Chinese ever to receive a Doctorate in Choral Conducting, and three Christian soloists : Clara Yip, Edmund Kwan, and Felix Suen.
